There are seasons in the long procession of human history when prophecy seems almost to rise from the ancient page, put on the garments of current affairs and walk straight into the morning newspaper. Words spoken centuries and millennia ago suddenly acquire geography, chronology and flesh; warnings once contemplated beneath the quiet light of a lamp return accompanied by satellite photographs, seismic traces, casualty figures, flooded cities, burning landscapes, collapsing mountainsides, retreating glaciers, hospital statistics, displaced populations, disrupted shipping lanes and television images transmitted instantaneously across the planet. Scripture begins to sound unnervingly contemporary, not because its words have changed, but because the world around us appears increasingly determined to supply the illustrations. The Apostle Paul looked across the centuries and wrote with startling directness: “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come” (2 Timothy 3:1). Not merely inconvenient times, expensive times, politically turbulent times or technologically bewildering times, but perilous times. Elsewhere he declared that “the Spirit speaketh expressly” concerning the latter times (1 Timothy 4:1); Peter spoke of “the last days” (2 Peter 3:3); Joel foresaw wonders “in the heavens and in the earth” (Joel 2:30); and Jesus Christ Himself, seated upon the Mount of Olives, foretold wars and rumours of wars, nation rising against nation and kingdom against kingdom, famines, pestilences and earthquakes in diverse places, before adding the solemn interpretive words: “All these are the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:6-8; Luke 21:10-11).
There is little intellectual virtue in becoming bashful precisely where prophecy begins acquiring fulfilment. If a thing is foretold and the thing foretold subsequently occurs, fulfilment is the appropriate word. We need not retreat into the safer language of coincidence, resemblance or interesting historical parallel merely because the vocabulary of prophecy makes the modern mind uncomfortable. Christ foretold wars, and wars rage; He foretold pestilences, and pestilences come; He foretold earthquakes in diverse places, and the earth trembles in diverse places; the apostles foretold perilous times, and peril increasingly surrounds human civilization from so many directions that the remarkable feature of our age is no longer merely the existence of danger but its convergence. This does not authorize prophetic recklessness. We have no warrant to seize every tremor, epidemic, cyclone or military confrontation and assign it a private eschatological serial number, nor to manufacture dates where Christ Himself withheld them, for “of that day and hour knoweth no man” (Matthew 24:36). But humility concerning the timetable must never become embarrassment concerning the prophecy. We need neither sensationalism nor euphemism. What was foretold is happening.
And the perils do not queue politely; they converge. The sea is warming, the atmosphere is rearranging itself, the mountains are shedding ancient ice, magma is stirring beneath the crust, faults are slipping in the darkness, pathogens are moving invisibly among men, nations are raging against nations, supply chains are stretching across precarious seas and governments are discovering that even words can become hazards. Floodwaters rise while treasuries borrow; drought attacks harvests while war interferes with fertilizer, grain and energy; shipping lanes become precarious while currencies weaken; hospitals confront disease while households confront inflation. One peril reaches for another until what began as a meteorological anomaly becomes an agricultural shock, what began as an agricultural shock becomes food inflation, what began as gunfire becomes a freight surcharge, and what began thousands of kilometres away finally arrives quietly at an ordinary household as another painful figure in the monthly budget. Isaiah’s imagery becomes almost architectural: “fear, and the pit, and the snare” (Isaiah 24:17-18). Amos depicts a man fleeing from a lion only to meet a bear, then reaching home, leaning his hand against the wall and being bitten by a serpent (Amos 5:19). Whatever their immediate prophetic contexts, those images capture with terrifying economy the anatomy of cascading peril: danger behind, danger ahead and danger waiting where safety was expected. The defining danger of our times, therefore, is not merely catastrophe: it is cascade. Peril is no longer approaching from one direction; it appears to have surrounded the compass.
And now the Pacific Ocean is demanding our attention. Recent international coverage has employed the arresting language of a potentially extraordinary El Niño, and the official forecasts are formidable enough without embellishment. The World Meteorological Organization reported on 3th September that El Niño was firmly established, with a nearly 100 per cent likelihood of persisting through February 2027 and an expectation that it would strengthen into a very strong event before peaking toward the end of 2026. A week later, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Centre reported a greater than 90 per cent probability of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter, with August’s Niño-3.4 sea-surface-temperature anomaly at +1.8°C and substantially larger anomalies farther east. NOAA further assigned a 75 per cent probability that the October-December 2026 season could reach a threshold exceeding previous events in its record extending back to 1950, while carefully emphasizing that even an event of exceptional strength does not guarantee particular impacts everywhere.
The Pacific, occupying an expanse so vast that maps almost domesticate its immensity, is not merely a blue interval separating continents. It is one of the great thermal engines of the planet, absorbing, storing, redistributing and exchanging stupendous quantities of heat with the atmosphere above it. Changes within that ocean-atmosphere system can reorganize rainfall and temperature probabilities far beyond the Pacific basin, so that something happening in apparently remote equatorial waters may eventually disturb farms, rivers, reservoirs, roads, ports, markets and households on other continents. WMO itself stresses precisely this combination of enormous global influence and regional variability: a very strong El Niño increases the likelihood of major shifts in rainfall, temperature and atmospheric circulation, but its strength alone does not determine the severity of impacts in any particular country because other climate drivers and local conditions intervene.
At this point, intellectual honesty requires a declaration. I am a Quantity Surveyor, not a meteorologist, climatologist or oceanographer. My professional habitat lies rather more naturally among quantities, measurements, rates, valuations, contracts, tender documents, costs and the occasionally mysterious behaviour of contractors than among thermoclines, equatorial trade winds, sea-surface-temperature anomalies and Walker circulations. But, confronted by the extraordinary contemporary coverage of the developing El Niño, and persuaded that one ought to understand a phenomenon before writing confidently about it, I have taken a deliberate dive into the relevant climatological literature. What I found was considerably more intricate, majestic and formidable than the familiar shorthand that El Niño is simply “warming in the Pacific.” There is also a useful intellectual principle here: expertise deserves respect, but curiosity need not remain imprisoned within professional boundaries. One may enter another discipline as a visitor, provided one enters humbly, reads carefully, listens respectfully to those who inhabit it professionally and does not pretend to own the house. The purpose here, therefore, is not to masquerade as a meteorologist, but to understand sufficiently what meteorologists are describing when they warn that a vast coupled ocean-atmosphere system is shifting state.
Under more neutral tropical Pacific conditions, easterly trade winds blow broadly across the equatorial ocean from the South American side toward Indonesia, pushing warm surface waters westward and causing them to accumulate across the western tropical Pacific around Indonesia and neighbouring regions. Toward the eastern edge of the tropical Pacific, along the Pacific-facing coasts of South America, particularly Peru and Ecuador, colder and nutrient-rich water rises from depth through upwelling. Between the warmer surface layer and colder deeper water lies the thermocline, generally deeper toward the western Pacific and shallower toward the east. Above this enormous oceanic architecture operates the Walker circulation: warm western-Pacific waters encourage moist air to rise, air moves eastward aloft and descends farther east, while near the surface the trade winds help complete the circulation. Ocean speaks to atmosphere; atmosphere answers ocean. Heat, pressure, wind and water participate in a planetary choreography so vast that entire nations sit beneath only portions of its movement, receiving rain, drought, wind and temperature partly according to the disposition of forces unfolding over waters thousands of kilometres away.
Then El Niño disturbs the dance. The easterly trade winds weaken; warm surface water that had accumulated toward the western Pacific spreads eastward across the equatorial ocean; the thermocline changes its slope and deepens farther east; normal cold-water upwelling is suppressed; and the central and eastern equatorial Pacific become anomalously warm. Yet the disturbance does not remain imprisoned inside the ocean. The atmosphere senses the altered geography of heat beneath it and responds. Tropical convection shifts, great rain-bearing cloud systems migrate, atmospheric pressure patterns reorganize, the Walker circulation weakens or changes configuration, and jet streams and planetary-scale atmospheric waves respond. Through what climatologists call teleconnections, the disturbance reaches far beyond the waters in which it began. Indeed, NOAA reported in September that the coupled ocean-atmosphere system was already displaying a strengthening El Niño, including enhanced convection and rainfall across parts of the central and eastern Pacific and suppressed convection over Indonesia. El Niño, therefore, is not merely a pool of unusually warm water sitting somewhere beyond the horizon; it is ocean and atmosphere changing their choreography together, with repercussions capable of travelling around the earth.
Consider the chain with forensic simplicity: the ocean moves the atmosphere; the atmosphere moves the clouds; the clouds redistribute the rain; the rain rearranges harvests; harvests influence food; food influences prices; prices enter household budgets; and households thousands of kilometres away eventually discover that the Pacific Ocean has entered their accounts without ever requesting permission. That is the majesty and menace of an interconnected planet. Job records God asking, “Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?” and questioning him concerning “the treasures of the snow” and the way by which the east wind is scattered upon the earth (Job 38:22-28). The Psalmist declares that God “bringeth the wind out of his treasuries” (Psalm 135:7), while Jeremiah asks, “Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain?” (Jeremiah 14:22). Such texts were never intended to discourage scientific investigation; they establish its proper posture. Investigation need not abolish wonder, explanation need not produce arrogance, and the discovery of mechanism need not create the illusion of mastery. Indeed, the deeper humanity penetrates the machinery of creation, the more astonishing that machinery becomes.
El Niño is particularly fascinating because it is a double-edged climatic sword. It does not simply mean rain, and it does not simply mean drought; it redistributes climatic probability. One land may thirst while another drowns. Reservoirs may refill while hillsides collapse. A farmer may look upward and receive the rain for which he prayed while, downstream, another family watches the same water enter its sitting room. Rivers may recover while bridges disappear, aquifers may recharge while roads are severed, and crops may flourish in one region while harvests fail in another. A climatic disturbance can therefore carry relief and destruction simultaneously, and Scripture is profoundly familiar with that terrible ambiguity of water. Noah’s ark was carried by the same waters beneath which another world disappeared; Israel crossed through the sea by the same waters that overwhelmed Pharaoh’s pursuing army; Elijah prayed and rain ended drought (1 Kings 18:41-45), while Genesis records waters prevailing upon the earth until mountains were covered (Genesis 7:17-20). Isaiah speaks of waters overflowing and passing over (Isaiah 8:7-8), while the Psalmist knows both the God who “turneth the wilderness into a standing water” and the God before whom waters themselves tremble (Psalm 107:35; Psalm 77:16). Water can be mercy and water can be judgement; water can sustain civilization and water can dismantle it.
For Kenya, therefore, the correct response to an exceptionally strong El Niño is neither meteorological hysteria nor cavalier dismissal. Conditions in the equatorial Pacific matter greatly, but they do not mechanically dictate the rainfall received at every Kenyan locality. The Indian Ocean, regional atmospheric circulation, seasonality, topography and other interacting systems matter. WMO currently expects a positive Indian Ocean Dipole as well, and expressly cautions that such additional climate drivers may reinforce, weaken or alter typical El Niño effects in different regions. A powerful Pacific El Niño is therefore not, by itself, a street-level rainfall forecast for Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu, Garissa, or Mbololo in Taita-Taveta. The intellectually responsible course is to follow authoritative regional and national meteorological forecasts as they sharpen and to distinguish carefully between global climatic signals and local weather outcomes. Yet uncertainty over the precise quantity, timing and geographical distribution of rain is not an argument against preparation. Noah did not wait for water to enter the ark before deciding that perhaps the forecast deserved attention. Proverbs 22:3 states the principle with extraordinary economy: “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Preparedness is not panic; preparedness is prudence.
History adds sobriety. The extraordinary climatic disruptions surrounding 1877-78 coincided with devastating droughts and famines across enormous portions of the world. The lesson is not that El Niño alone determines human catastrophe, for weather encounters governance, political economy, poverty, food distribution, infrastructure and social vulnerability when it reaches human societies. That qualification makes the lesson more rather than less important. A meteorological hazard does not arrive upon a blank landscape; it encounters institutions, preparedness, competence and incompetence. Nature supplies the hazard; human systems determine how much of that hazard becomes disaster. Rain does not understand corruption, but corruption may determine whether the drainage system was properly constructed. Floodwater does not understand procurement, but procurement may determine whether the bridge survives the flood. Drought does not understand fiscal policy, but fiscal policy determines whether strategic reserves exist. A landslide does not understand planning law, but planning determines whether houses were permitted beneath an unstable slope. Disease does not understand public administration, but public administration determines whether surveillance identifies an outbreak early. The heavens may supply the examination paper; governance determines how prepared the nation is to sit the examination.
Nor are the heavens our only source of peril. Beneath our feet lies a planet whose apparent solidity is partly an accommodation granted to the brevity of human lifetimes. We build upon the ground as though permanence were one of its contractual obligations. We survey it, subdivide it, title it, value it, mortgage it, excavate it and load it with concrete, masonry, steel and glass. Yet beneath our foundations tectonic plates continue their almost imperceptible journeys. Stress accumulates along faults, rock resists, energy accumulates and eventually friction loses the argument. Then the earth moves. In seconds, structures that took years to construct can become rubble; roads split, bridges fail, utilities rupture, fires follow and mountainsides collapse. Where major displacement occurs beneath or near the sea, water itself may be set in motion and arrive upon distant coastlines as tsunami. Human civilization writes title deeds upon the crust of a planet that never signed them.
And beneath all this, the planet is never quite as still as our feet persuade us to believe. Across the world, seismometers sit in near-continuous vigil, exquisitely sensitive instruments detecting vibrations that human bodies never notice. The U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Centre currently locates and publishes approximately 30,000 earthquakes every year, describing these as only the most important among the many millions of earthquakes estimated to occur annually. Somewhere a fault slips, somewhere rock fractures, somewhere seismic waves begin radiating through the crust and somewhere an electronic instrument draws the trembling line upon a screen. Most events pass beneath ordinary human consciousness; others rattle windows and furniture; some split roads; a few bring cities to their knees. Humanity walks about upon the crust conducting business, signing contracts, building towers and debating politics while instruments quietly record a planet trembling thousands upon thousands of times.
Against that extraordinary physical background, the words spoken upon the Mount of Olives acquire almost seismic resonance: “There shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places” (Matthew 24:7). Modern seismology can explain plate boundaries, fault mechanics, elastic rebound and seismic-wave propagation with sophistication unimaginable to the first hearers of those words, but mechanism does not abolish prophecy. Knowing how a foretold event occurs does not make it less foretold. The earth shakes in places where nobody feels it; the seismograph feels it for us. When a great rupture finally comes, the tiny oscillating trace that specialists watch on a screen becomes concrete dust, twisted reinforcement, fractured highways, sirens, darkness and human grief. Science tells us where the fault lay, how stress accumulated and how seismic waves propagated; Scripture had already told us that earthquakes would characterize the landscape of peril. The instrument explains the trembling; it does not unsay the prophecy.
Mountains themselves carry another reminder. Rain penetrates slopes, pore-water pressure rises, effective resistance declines, weathered rock and soil lose stability, and gravity, patient from the beginning, waits until the balance is broken. Then whole masses of earth begin moving downhill, gathering trees, buildings, vehicles and human beings into a terrible moving mixture. Yet even where the mountain remains outwardly intact, unimaginable energies may be working beneath it. Magma moves and accumulates under immense heat and pressure, rising through fractures and reservoirs, pulsing beneath apparently tranquil ground until occasionally the mountain can contain it no longer. Then the crust opens. Incandescent lava fountains into darkness in terrifying reds, oranges and yellows; molten rock pours down slopes like rivers of fire; gases hiss from fractures and fumaroles; yellow deposits of elemental sulphur, the ancient brimstone, may form where sulphur-bearing gases cool; and elsewhere the mountain abandons fire for suffocation, throwing immense columns of ash, pulverized rock and dust high into the atmosphere. The spectacle can be almost beautiful until one remembers what the beauty is carrying: ash can darken noon into twilight, choke lungs, contaminate water, overload roofs, damage engines and disrupt aviation, while pyroclastic flows can descend with lethal heat and speed and rain mixing with loose volcanic debris can produce lahars roaring down valleys with the destructive density of flowing concrete.
Then Psalm 46 ceases to sound merely figurative: “Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” Isaiah writes of mountains trembling (Isaiah 64:1); Nahum declares that “the mountains quake at him, and the hills melt” (Nahum 1:5); Micah depicts mountains melting and valleys cleaving (Micah 1:4); and Psalm 104 speaks with startling imagery of the One who “toucheth the hills, and they smoke” (Psalm 104:32). We have read such language devotionally for generations; geology reminds us with formidable literalness that mountains really can move, hills can smoke and the apparently solid earth conceals furnaces beneath our feet.
Nor is the frozen world exempt. Across Kyrgyzstan and the great mountain systems of Central Asia, glaciers that can appear eternal within the span of a human lifetime are retreating. UNDP’s review of Kyrgyzstan’s glaciation reports that over roughly seventy years the country’s total glacier area declined by about 16 per cent, while the area of its large glaciers declined by about 17 per cent, with considerable variation between river basins. Ice lost from a distant mountain is not merely an aesthetic subtraction from the landscape; glaciers store water, feed rivers and interact with fragile high-altitude terrain, and their retreat and destabilization can alter downstream risks. Job’s question from the whirlwind therefore retains its majesty even in the satellite age: “Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?” (Job 38:29). We can now photograph that ice from orbit, map its margins, calculate its retreat and watch the consequences of its instability almost in real time, but measurement has not made the mountains less formidable.
The Himalayas have just supplied a horrifying contemporary illustration. On 26th August 2026, a glacier collapse near the Nepal-Tibet frontier unleashed a massive flood and debris disaster through the Trishuli Valley system, destroying settlements and infrastructure and producing an enormous human toll; subsequent reporting has documented villages wiped away, roads severed, hydropower facilities engulfed and thousands dead or missing across the affected region. The early scientific picture has continued to develop, but satellite imagery confirmed a major release of ice, rock and sediment, and experts have examined rapid melting and unusually high temperatures among the possible contributing conditions. Thus even ice, that ancient emblem of stillness, can suddenly become motion. What rested upon a mountain can fracture, fall, entrain rock, mud and water, descend through narrow valleys and transform, within minutes, into a wall of destruction. The mountain does not need to erupt to become dangerous; sometimes it merely has to thaw, fracture and let gravity finish the sentence.
And while humanity watches oceans, skies, mountains, glaciers and faults, another kingdom advances largely unseen. Viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites and other pathogens require neither passports nor visas, neither immigration counters nor diplomatic clearance. Something invisible to the naked eye can humble nations possessing satellites, nuclear arsenals, aircraft carriers, artificial intelligence, skyscrapers and trillion-dollar economies. COVID-19 demonstrated the principle with brutal efficiency: a biological crisis became an economic crisis, educational crisis, logistical crisis, fiscal crisis and social crisis almost simultaneously. Christ’s word therefore returns again: “pestilences.” Viral pathogens continue to emerge and mutate; antimicrobial resistance complicates humanity’s struggle against bacterial infection; global mobility permits biological threats to travel at speeds unimaginable to earlier generations; dense settlements can magnify vulnerability; floods can contaminate water; wars can destroy sanitation and health infrastructure; malnutrition can weaken immunity; displacement can crowd vulnerable populations together. Once again peril reaches for peril, and the danger multiplies not merely by addition but by interaction. Revelation’s imagery of death by sword, hunger and pestilence (Revelation 6:8) is terrifying precisely because these destroyers so readily travel together.
Then comes war, perhaps humanity’s oldest self-manufactured catastrophe. “Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars,” Christ said (Matthew 24:6), and modern warfare has acquired an extraordinary capacity to escape the battlefield economically. A missile fired thousands of kilometres from Kenya can eventually arrive at Mombasa without ever entering Kenyan airspace: it arrives as freight, fuel, fertilizer, marine insurance, wheat, steel, exchange-rate pressure and inflation; it may eventually arrive, with impeccable arithmetic, as another rate in somebody’s Bill of Quantities. A maritime chokepoint closes, vessels reroute, voyage distances increase, insurance premiums respond, freight rates rise, landed costs increase, currencies absorb pressure and an ordinary household far removed from the battlefield pays part of the war’s invoice. Joel speaks of nations preparing war (Joel 3:9-10), Isaiah describes the tumult of nations (Isaiah 17:12), and the Psalmist asks why the nations rage (Psalm 2:1). Such is modern interconnectedness that war has learned to travel without soldiers, exporting its economic shrapnel far beyond the radius of its weapons.
Our celebrated global supply chains reveal the same vulnerability. For decades efficiency became commercial orthodoxy: lean inventories, just-in-time delivery, specialized production, global sourcing and minimal redundancy. It worked magnificently while everything worked. But efficiency and resilience are not identical twins. A system optimized to eliminate every apparent redundancy may discover during crisis that what the accountant called waste was what survival called reserve capacity. One blocked canal, one closed port, one war, one pandemic, one drought, one failed harvest or one critical manufacturing interruption can propagate through the network. Ecclesiastes 11:2 counsels, “Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.” Joseph’s administration in Egypt offers an even grander precedent: abundance was not consumed as though abundance were permanent; grain was stored because scarcity had been foreseen (Genesis 41:34-36, 47-49). Diversification and strategic reserves, apparently, entered the wisdom of Scripture long before they entered the MBA curriculum.
And after atmospheric peril, geological peril, glacial peril, biological peril, geopolitical peril and logistical peril, we arrive at perhaps the most exasperating category of all: the perils we manufacture ourselves through misgovernance. There is something uniquely tragic about adding avoidable turbulence to a planet already abundantly supplied with unavoidable uncertainty. Recent Kenyan political experience has repeatedly illustrated the hazards of dramatic governmental pronouncement followed by collision with law, contracts, diplomacy, economics or administrative reality. Policies may be announced with thunder, defended with certainty and subsequently modified, withdrawn, contradicted, judicially challenged or clarified. Changing course is not inherently weakness; wisdom sometimes requires it, and a government incapable of revising a genuinely mistaken course would itself be dangerous. But where the obstacle necessitating reversal was reasonably foreseeable before the original pronouncement, where the law could have been read beforehand, contractual consequences quantified beforehand, diplomatic implications considered beforehand and affected interests consulted beforehand, a sterner question inevitably arises: who counted the cost?
And at this point, after roaming through thermoclines, tectonic plates, glaciers, pathogens and geopolitics, a Quantity Surveyor finally returns gratefully to familiar professional territory. Christ asks in Luke 14:28: “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” There could hardly be a more appropriate biblical text for public administration. Count the cost before building, count the cost before cancelling, count the cost before borrowing, count the cost before promising, count the cost before terminating, count the cost before decreeing, and above all count the cost before words spoken from a position of power return carrying an invoice. For after the decree comes the arithmetic. The announcement may require thirty seconds, a microphone and applause; its consequences may require diplomats, lawyers, engineers, economists, courts, supplementary budgets, compensation claims and taxpayers. Natural hazards cannot read constitutions; governments can. A cyclone cannot consult the Attorney-General before making landfall; a President can. A volcano cannot conduct public participation before erupting; the Executive can before making public policy. El Niño cannot commission a feasibility study before reorganizing atmospheric circulation; a State can before cancelling a multibillion-shilling undertaking. Earthquakes are involuntary; policy incoherence is not.
This is why constitutional government is not decorative legalism. Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya binds public decision-making to the rule of law, participation, good governance, integrity, transparency and accountability; Article 73 conceives public authority as a trust; Article 129 declares that executive authority derives from the people and must be exercised for their well-being and benefit; Article 201 demands openness, accountability and prudent use of public money; and Article 232 embeds responsive, prompt, effective, impartial and equitable public service. These provisions are not ceremonial paragraphs to be dusted off on Constitution Day; they are institutional shock absorbers, deliberately positioned between political power and public peril. Proverbs 15:22 declares that “without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established,” while Proverbs 11:14 warns that “where no counsel is, the people fall.” Constitutionalism and consultation therefore possess a surprisingly ancient echo: power is safest when wisdom is permitted into the room before decision becomes decree.
Proverbs 21:5 could almost have been drafted for the Cabinet memorandum preceding a major policy announcement: “The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.” Ecclesiastes 5:2 supplies the executive summary: “Be not rash with thy mouth.” Proverbs 18:21 goes deeper still: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue,” while James describes the tongue as a fire and marvels that so small a member can kindle so great a matter (James 3:5-6). Words are never entirely weightless, and words spoken from high office are heavier still. Scripture understood thousands of years before the modern press conference what governments periodically rediscover through diplomatic protests, judicial orders, contractual disputes, compensation claims and supplementary budgets: words spoken from positions of power can acquire invoices. There is something especially tragic, therefore, about manufacturing administrative earthquakes while awaiting geological ones.
Yet the prophetic message is emphatically not an invitation to fatalism. Scripture never presents foreknowledge as an excuse for paralysis; rather, biblical warning repeatedly creates human responsibility. Noah was warned of a flood and built. Joseph was shown famine and stored. Nehemiah perceived danger and organized. The wise virgins anticipated delay and carried oil. When Pharaoh was shown seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine, God supplied not merely revelation but a strategy, an administrator and a storage programme (Genesis 41:33-36). Christ commanded His disciples to “watch therefore” (Matthew 24:42), and Paul told the Thessalonians, “let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:6). Biblical prophecy does not teach people to sit beneath approaching clouds debating whether rain is prophetic; it teaches them to build the ark.
That principle should thunder through our institutions. Drainage systems should be cleared before extraordinary rainfall, not explained afterward; vulnerable slopes should be mapped before landslides, not mourned afterward; bridges, culverts, dams and retaining structures should be inspected before exceptional flows test them; food reserves should be strategic rather than theatrical; disease surveillance should function before hospitals overflow; supply chains should possess resilience before maritime routes close; fiscal buffers should exist before shocks arrive; contracts should be interrogated before signature and before termination; and disaster preparedness should be funded before disaster becomes television footage. There is a peculiar absurdity in possessing satellites capable of observing cloud systems from hundreds of kilometres above the earth while failing to unclog the drain outside the gate. James warns that “to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin” (James 4:17). Knowledge therefore increases not merely capacity but responsibility.
“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (Luke 12:48). What excuse can a generation possessing satellites, supercomputers, numerical weather models, seismic networks, genomic sequencing, engineering codes, instantaneous communication and artificial intelligence offer for failing to prepare against hazards it can increasingly see approaching? We can observe storms from space, model rivers before they flood, map unstable slopes, monitor volcanoes, measure shrinking glaciers, sequence pathogens, model epidemics, diversify supply chains, inspect bridges, maintain culverts, store food, interrogate contracts, read constitutions and calculate financial exposure. We can count the cost. When preventable catastrophe follows abundant warning, tragedy acquires the additional burden of accountability. Ezekiel’s watchman was accountable precisely because he had seen danger coming: “If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people,” the warning has discharged a solemn responsibility (Ezekiel 33:3-5). The watchman’s duty was not to stop the sword by rhetoric; it was to see, understand and sound the alarm.
Nor should citizens imagine themselves spectators. Paul writes, “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). The ordering deserves careful attention. “First of all” introduces the great ministry of prayer, and its first horizon is all humanity. Before Paul singles out kings, rulers, governors or magistrates, he gathers all people into the circumference of supplication, prayer, intercession and thanksgiving; rulers are then expressly brought within that universal company because decisions taken in palaces, parliaments, cabinet rooms and presidential offices can profoundly affect whether millions are able, in Paul’s very next words, to “lead a quiet and peaceable life.” Prayer for rulers is therefore neither political flattery nor exemption from scrutiny; it is part of prayer for humanity itself, because power exercised wisely can preserve peace while power exercised foolishly can distribute misery far beyond the ruler who exercised it. The Christian may consequently interrogate policy vigorously while praying earnestly for those entrusted with authority, asking that God grant them wisdom, restraint, justice, foresight and humility.
For wisdom may ultimately be the missing infrastructure of our age. Never has humanity possessed so much information, yet never have so many interconnected systems been capable of transmitting failure so quickly. We have satellites above the clouds and clogged drains beneath our feet; supercomputers capable of modelling weather and bureaucracies sometimes incapable of maintaining yesterday’s culvert; genomic sequencing capable of identifying a pathogen and health systems that may nevertheless struggle to contain its consequences; seismic networks capable of hearing tremors too faint for human senses and settlements still capable of being built where hazards are poorly understood; sophisticated financial models capable of quantifying contractual exposure to two decimal places and political systems still capable of creating that exposure through thirty seconds of enthusiasm at a microphone. Scripture never confuses accumulated knowledge with wisdom. Solomon therefore declares, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom” (Proverbs 4:7), and the distinction has rarely seemed more urgent. Information has multiplied. Wisdom remains scarce.
And now the prophetic architecture comes fully into view. Christ said there would be wars, and there are wars; He said nation would rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and they do; He spoke of famines, and they occur; He spoke of pestilences, and they come; He spoke of earthquakes in diverse places, and the earth trembles. Paul said perilous times would come, and peril increasingly arrives by land, sea and air, by fire and ice, by microorganism and missile, by market and policy and sometimes microphone. Peter spoke of the last days; Joel spoke of wonders in heaven and earth; Luke records Christ warning of “fearful sights and great signs” and of distress upon the earth (Luke 21:11, 25). We should therefore resist the peculiar modern temptation to become embarrassed by the obvious theological conclusion. Within the biblical worldview, when that which was foretold comes to pass, prophecy is being fulfilled.
Scientific explanation does not diminish that proposition; mechanism explains fulfilment, it does not abolish it. Geology tells us how faults rupture, volcanology tells us how magma rises, glaciology tells us how ice retreats and destabilizes, meteorology tells us how atmospheric circulation reorganizes, oceanography tells us how heat moves through the Pacific, virology tells us how pathogens replicate, epidemiology tells us how disease spreads, economics tells us how war transmits shocks through supply chains, and engineering tells us why structures fail under loads they cannot resist. None of these disciplines changes the prior fact that Scripture foretold wars, pestilences, earthquakes and perilous times. Indeed, science now permits humanity to watch with extraordinary detail the physical mechanisms through which such realities unfold. The microscope does not abolish pestilence because it reveals the pathogen; the seismograph does not abolish the earthquake because it records the wave; the satellite does not abolish the storm because it photographs the cloud; the thermal camera does not abolish the volcano because it measures the heat. Explanation is not negation.
Yet amid all this prophetic gravity, one sentence of Christ must never be omitted, because without it the picture would be distorted. Having warned His disciples that they would hear of wars and rumours of wars, He said, “See that ye be not troubled” (Matthew 24:6). What magnificent balance resides in those words. We are commanded to see without surrendering to fear, to discern without becoming sensational, to watch without becoming hysterical, to prepare without becoming paralysed and to pray without imagining that human competence is sufficient unto itself. “Watch therefore,” Christ says (Matthew 24:42); “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41); and when the signs He described begin to unfold, “then look up, and lift up your heads” (Luke 21:28). The biblical posture in perilous times is therefore neither the bowed head of despair nor the closed eyes of denial, but the lifted head of discernment.
For the prophecy that announces the storm simultaneously reveals that history has not escaped its Author. The God who warned Noah was already beyond the flood; the God who revealed Pharaoh’s famine had already prepared Joseph; the God who warned Nineveh provided opportunity for repentance; and the Christ who foretold wars, pestilences, earthquakes and distress also said, “See that ye be not troubled.” Prophecy is therefore not merely evidence that peril was foreseen; to the believer, it is evidence that peril did not surprise God. Isaiah declares, “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning” (Isaiah 46:9-10). History may bewilder us as it unfolds, but Scripture never presents history as having slipped its leash.
And therefore Psalm 46 rises majestically over the entire landscape: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” What language could be more fitting to an age of earthquakes, landslides, retreating ice, turbulent seas, volcanic fire, climatic disruption, war, disease and political instability? The Psalm does not deny the shaking; it identifies what does not shake. Hebrews speaks similarly of the removal of things that are shaken so “that those things which cannot be shaken may remain,” before concluding, “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace” (Hebrews 12:27-28). The contrast could hardly be more magnificent: oceans may move, mountains may move, glaciers may move, markets may move, governments may move and nations may move, but the believer is directed toward a Kingdom that cannot be moved.
The Pacific may warm, the atmosphere may reorganize, the trade winds may weaken, the rains may shift, rivers may rise, drought may parch the ground elsewhere, ancient ice may fracture, mountains may move, faults may rupture, magma may pulse beneath the crust, volcanoes may awaken, pathogens may mutate, nations may rage, wars may cast their economic shadows across continents, shipping routes may strain, markets may tremble and governments may stumble. Human hearts may fail “for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth” (Luke 21:26), but Christ does not leave His people staring downward at the wreckage. “When these things begin to come to pass,” He says, “then look up, and lift up your heads” (Luke 21:28). There lies the final posture of the watchful: not despair, not denial, not sensationalism, not complacency, but vigilance joined to faith, preparation joined to prayer, knowledge joined to humility and discernment joined to hope.
The Pacific is warming; the atmosphere is responding; glaciers are retreating; instruments are recording the earth’s incessant tremors; mountains still move; volcanoes still remind us that fire lies beneath our feet; disease still travels; nations still rage; wars still rumble; supply chains still strain; governments still discover, sometimes painfully, that pronouncements have consequences. The warnings are sounding, science is sharpening its instruments, history has entered its evidence, the prophets have testified, the apostles have spoken, and Jesus Christ said these things would come. The prophecy was not given so that humanity might panic, but so that humanity might recognize the times, order its house, exercise wisdom, prepare diligently, pray fervently and remain watchful. Noah builds before the rain, Joseph stores before the famine, Nehemiah organizes before the enemy arrives, the wise carry oil before the midnight cry, the watchman sounds the trumpet before the sword reaches the city, and a prudent nation counts the cost before the microphone is switched on.
These are perilous times. Scripture foretold them; the world is increasingly illustrating them; and when that which was foretold unfolds before our eyes, we need not mince words concerning what we are witnessing. Prophecy is walking into the headlines. Yet the proper response is neither trembling sensationalism nor sophisticated indifference, but the ancient discipline of the watchful: to see clearly, think deeply, prepare carefully, govern wisely, pray continually and stand firmly. “The end of all things is at hand,” Peter writes; “be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer” (1 Peter 4:7). There is the equilibrium: prophecy without panic, vigilance without hysteria, faith without blindness and preparation without fear.
The clouds are gathering, but the prudent will not wait for the first torrent before repairing the roof. The warning precedes the storm because warning is mercy; knowledge precedes responsibility because knowledge creates accountability; and prophecy precedes fulfilment because God declares “the end from the beginning” (Isaiah 46:10). When heaven warns, wisdom prepares. When nature threatens, prudence fortifies. When nations rage, the watchful pray. When rulers exercise power, they should count the cost. And when the world begins increasingly to resemble the landscape Christ, the apostles and the prophets described, the faithful need neither avert their eyes nor dilute their language.
For these are the perils of our times; Scripture foretold them, the mechanisms of creation are displaying them, history is recording them, and prophecy is walking before us in the headlines. May we therefore have eyes to see, ears to hear, wisdom to prepare and faith to stand. And, particularly for those entrusted with earthly power, may one final lesson be learned before the clouds finally break: when heaven sends the warning, preparation should precede the storm; when men manufacture the peril themselves, wisdom should precede the decree; and whatever else happens, the clarification should certainly not come after the flood.
